Strategic Gift Giving During an Economic Downturn

William J. Qualls, Ph.D Chair, Board of Trustees

Below are several ideas on how you can make a charitable difference during these difficult economic times.

Give to organizations with which you already have a relationship. Your gift allows the National Black MBA Foundation to continue to grow and serve African-American youths by assisting them in achieving greater access to educational and career opportunities. The foundation recognizes and invests in the emerging talent of African-American youths through scholarship, educational, and leadership programs.

Give less but give strategically. We know that the impact of the current economic crisis limits opportunities for those who are interested in pursuing careers in business. Even though you may have less to spread around, you may increase the impact of your gift by focusing your giving on selected organizations. By matching your gift with the educational initiatives of the NBMBA Foundation, an issue close to your heart, you can see the impact of your gift immediately. Remember, every gift does matter and your gift matters the most during these times.

Donate other assets. When we have less cash to allocate, most of us have other assets that we can give. Assets such as artwork, timeshares, stocks, real estate and even a life insurance policy with the Foundation as the beneficiary or as a gift itself are permissible. To take advantage of the tax benefits, your donations must be made before the end of the year.

Donate your time and talent. For most of us, time is an important commodity. Yet, sometimes, giving your time and expertise can have a greater impact. Your willingness to serve as a volunteer, on committees, or assist in fundraising can have a direct impact on “Investing in the Excellence of Our Youth.”

As we reach the end of 2008, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has generously contributed to “Investing in the Excellence of Our Youth.” Your gifts will have a real and lasting benefit to our community. It is because of you that the programs of NBMBAA and NBMBA Foundation will continue to grow and strengthen the opportunities for African-American youths.

I also urge Leadership Circle members who have not yet made their 2008 pledge to contribute now.

In this environment your gift is more important than ever.
